Gujarat Titans (GT) still in race to defend their IPL 2023 title with a 62-run triumph against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2. Shubman Gill (129 off 60 balls) and Mohit Sharma (5/10) shined for the defending champions.
Earlier, Gujarat Titans produced 233/3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday as Shubman Gill pounded the MI bowlers while scoring his third century of the year. Gill reached his century in just 49 balls scoring 129 runs including 7 fours and 10 sixes.
Mohammed Shami’s dismissals of Nehal Wadhera (4 off 3 balls) and Rohit Sharma (8 off 7 balls) during the chase blew MI’s aim of winning 6th title away. Tilak Varma entered and blasted 43 off 14, however he was caught by Rashid Khan’s cunning bowling as he failed to complete his sweep. Cameron Green (30 off 20 balls) and SKY (61 off 38 balls) offered MI some fleeting optimism. However, neither of them was able to lead the team to victory.
Shubman Gill after winning Player of the Match: For me, it is playing ball to ball, over to over. The over where I hit three sixes gave me the momentum to go big. That’s when I realised it could be my day. It was a good wicket to bat on as well. Not a conscious decision, you keep inventing as a batter but for me the belief is more important. I am coming off a good international season as well. Had a good season last time as well. When I start well, I feel confident I can score well. From the last WI tour, I think I have shifted a gear, I got injured before the last IPL but I have been working on my game. I have worked on a few areas and made technical changes ahead of the NZ series after the T20I World Cup. Expectations are something that follow you outside the ropes, but once you step on the field it is all about trying how to contribute for the team. I think this was probably my best innings so far in the IPL.
